Patchwork Perspectives: Exploring the Complexity of Collage-Informed Art
Integrating Art into Classroom Curricula with The Phillips Collection & University of Maryland
Collage combines materials to transfer new messages and ideas. Collage and collage-informed works from Multiplicity: Blackness in Contemporary American Collage (on view July 6-September 22, 2024) reflect the intricate tapestry of cultures and individuals. In this immersive one-week, in-person Summer Teacher Institute, participants will create artwork through the assembly of paper, photographs, fabric, and reclaimed materials. Facilitated by multiple artist-educators, we will explore the diverse applications of collage and its ability to convey multifaceted themes. Educators in the program will consider how to capture the essence of our collective identities and endless creativity in and out of the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to display their culminating collaged works on view at the Phillips from August-September.

The course meets daily on Monday, July 29-Friday, August 2, from 10:15 am-1 pm, at The Phillips Collection (1600 21st St NW, Washington, DC, 20009).
All course supplies will be provided. The 15-hour course includes:
- 14 hours of in-person instructional workshops at The Phillips Collection will include: looking closely at artwork in the galleries, creating art, learning about social-emotional & culturally-responsive teaching strategies, and hands-on workshops with guest artist-educators Leslie Turner and Fatemah Khawaji.
- 1 hour of independent work time will include reading a journal article and completing pre- and post-course surveys.
This workshop is applicable and open to educators who teach all subject areas and grade levels.
- Participants can elect to receive professional development:
- Maryland: 1 CPD credit
- Washington, DC: 15 PLU
- Virginia: 15 points for Professional Development activities (needs pre-approval from your evaluator/supervisor)
- Credit for other states is available on a case-by-case basis.

The Phillips Collection and University of Maryland partner to offer professional development courses for PK-12 educators. The courses provide opportunities to integrate the visual arts seamlessly into the core curriculum, using The Phillips Collection’s Prism.K12 arts integration strategies and resources. Educators will expand their understanding of and skills in arts integration by planning, practicing, and implementing arts-integrated lessons in their classroom. Through online engagement and hands-on practice with students, the courses are delivered through virtual or in-person learning in collaboration with the University of Maryland and The Phillips Collection.
