Image Licensing
The Phillips provides high-resolution images of works in its permanent collection for a reasonable fee. (Fees for images vary based on the type of image, the print run, the placement of image, and other factors.) At least two weeks are preferred for fulfillment, but rush requests are accommodated whenever possible.
The Phillips Collection offers reproductions of works of art in a variety of formats, including TIFF digital file, JPG digital file, color transparency, and black and white print. The museum is in the process of digitizing its entire collection.
All requests for use must be in writing and may be submitted by e-mail or mail. Please include as much detail as possible about the publication (or other use), including:
- Title
- Author
- Publisher
- Publication year
- Print run
- Language(s)
- Interior or cover use
- Color or black and white reproduction.
Once a request is approved, the Phillips sends an invoice and a reproduction rights agreement. Advance payment via check, credit card, or wire transfer in U.S. dollars is required for the order to be processed. Upon receipt of payment and a signed copy of the agreement, the Phillips sends the image and grants permission to reproduce it.
Transparencies must be returned by the end of the three-month rental period to: Visual Resources Department, The Phillips Collection, 1600 21st Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009
Any non-editorial or commercial use of a Phillips Collection image, including the full design or layout and information regarding its distribution, must be approved. The Phillips Collection reserves the right to refuse any such proposal.
