The Phillips Collection Main Gallery, 1927

Before we begin, let’s understand a few different types of collections. The Phillips collects modern (19th- and 20th-century) and contemporary (living artists) art as well as some earlier works that served as inspiration for later artists. Museum founder Duncan Phillips collected, in particular, expressive, individualistic, colorful, and nature-based art.
